Paper Two Question 1
In this video, Mrs Wear explains how to tackle Paper 2 Question 1 of the AQA English Language GCSE - the so-called “easy” question that’s worth 4 marks. She stresses that while it looks simple, you do not want to lose marks on it.
Key points she teaches:
-
Task: Shade the four statements that are true, based only on a specific line range.
-
Marks and timing: It’s worth 4 marks. Spend no more than 5 minutes, ideally 2–3 minutes, and complete it during your 15 minutes of reading time so you gain extra time for later questions.
-
Skill tested: Comprehension — the ability to identify explicit and implicit information and ideas. This means spotting what the text clearly says (explicit) and what it suggests (implicit).
-
Boxing off line ranges: Always mark the given lines in the exam so you do not accidentally use evidence outside the required section.
-
Strategy:
-
Work through each statement in order, checking if it is true or false.
-
Watch for tricky wording where meaning changes (e.g., “most people in Britain” vs. “most people who ride a bike”).
-
Don’t rely on general knowledge; only use the text.
-
Look at context, not just keyword matches.
-
Even when you think you’ve found four true statements, still check them all to avoid missing a mistake.

Why it matters: Many students lose marks by rushing, misreading implicit meaning, or relying on guesswork. Careful checking ensures you always secure these easy marks.
