If you are a GCSE student completing the AQA English Language GCSE then this video is for you. It will go over the most important things that you need to know about paper 1 question 2 and in only 60 seconds.

Now, you may be thinking that 60 seconds isn't enough and I completely agree with you!

This video should absolutely not be where your revision ends. However, it is a great place for it to start. Let me explain why.

This video will cover the absolute core, foundational knowledge that you need about the question: how long to spend on it; what you have to do; what skills it is assessing.

You need this information because losing marks for not using the correct line range, or spending twice as long as it as you should do, would be such silly - and unnecessary - mistakes.

It is not about 'revision' so much as making sure you understand what this question asks of you. Before you work on revising language analysis, that is such an important first step.

So, all in all, wouldn't you say that's worth 60 seconds of your time?

Once you have the foundational understanding of the question, you can then move on to the longer questions which take a much deeper dive into the skill of language analysis and how to reach those top marks.

The first thing you need to know about this question is that it is eight marks, and that means you're going to be spending around 10 to 15 minutes writing your answer depending on the timing strategy that you've gone for. This question is always phrased very similarly. How does the writer use language to describe X? And X will vary depending on the text. Because of that wording of the question, the skill you're needing to demonstrate is language analysis. Don't do structural analysis, you don't get any marks for that. This question is focused on a specific line range, but they copy that for you in the exam, so you don't have to box it off yourself. Because it's eight marks, you're aiming to write two T paragraphs, which means

you need two different ideas to answer the question. And for each of those ideas, you're looking to analyze one, two techni- not techniques, quotes to be able to prove your ideas, and you need to analyze in detail.
